Gerard Way Judges on U.S. Department of State and mtvU Scholarship Panel

July 10th, 2009 | Johnnie | 1 Comment | Email Mikey Way Online!

Here’s just another reason nobody can say My Chemical Romance doesn’t do anyone any good.

Gerard Way was on a panel of musical guests (also featuring Death Cab For Cutie, Santigold, and Vampire Weekend) judging students who were in the running to be awarded one of four Fullbright-mtvU scholarships. Fullbright is a project put together by mtvU (MTV’s University network) and the U.S. Department of State, and was established to “promote the power of music”. Recipients went through a series of merit-based selection processes and were reviewed by U.S. and foreign academic leaders as well as area experts. Gerard Way and his fellow judges went through each of their nominations to slim down to whom they believed were the top candidates. The final four were chosen by the Fullbright Scholarship Board. They get to travel to foreign countries to work on a self-assigned project to benefit those communities and post their findings through mtvU’s Fullbright website.

I can’t even say how proud I am of Gerard for judging on something like this, and even more so for these amazing individuals who are going to great lengths to help improve this world through the power of music.

And these amazing individuals are…

Andrew Magill, who graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) with a B.A. in Cultural Studies in May 2009, will travel to Malawi to work with the UNC Malawi Project and AIDS organizations to video-record narratives of Malawian families and communities affected by HIV/AIDS. Andrew will collaborate with Peter Mawanga, a well-known musician and social activist, to develop a concept album whose sales will benefit AIDS social service networks.
Michael Silvers, a doctoral student in Ethnomusicology at UCLA, will travel to Brazil to study the relationship between the culture of forró, a kind of popular dance music, and the climate of northeastern Brazil. Working with Vila Estúdio, a recording studio in Fortaleza, Ceará; accordionists from around the state; and a quadrilha square dance ensemble, he will explore the ways in which climate change and drought have impacted how and why people make music.
Rod Solaimani, who graduated from Georgetown University with a B.S. in Foreign Policy in 2008, will travel to Morocco to study and participate in the Afro-Arab-Gnawa-Western musical exchange. A skilled percussionist, he will research the impact of U.S.-Moroccan musical partnerships in three cities, use his findings in local high school music curricula and promote cross-cultural collaboration with a student concert.
Tina Wadhwa, who graduated from Columbia University in 2007 with a BA in Political Science and Economics, will travel to India to create a documentary exploring the impact and influence of Bollywood music on underprivileged youth in Mumbai. She will also develop the music and drama center of the Akanksha Foundation while focusing on the role of music as a vehicle for collective expression and understanding among the children.

Want to be involved? Check out http://fulbright.mtvu.com/ for their blogs as well as information about the scholarship and how to participate.

Gerard and Lindsey Way at Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman Party; My Chemical Romance Mentions in Rock Sound; “The Umbrella Academy” Harvey Nominations

The above two photos were posted by Amanda Palmer of a party she and Neil Gaiman hosted. Thanks to the gorgeous Brandi (My Chemical Freak), Sarza, Natalie, Fiz, and anyone else that sent me the photographs! Much appreciated!

Green Day

Green Day appeared in a recent issue of Rock Sound. In the interview, frontman Billie Joe was asked about current bands such as My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy. This was Billie’s response:

In the same issue was an article about Coalesce. James Dewees, touring keyboardist for My Chemical Romance as well as the current drummer for Frank Iero’s side project, Leathermouth, was the drummer for Coalesce. In a sidebar, Rock Sound described some of the band member’s side projects and James Dewees got an astounding three out of the eight mentions. Well, the man’s been busy the last 10 years!

And the good news keeps rolling in. The Umbrella Academy is up for a few goodies at this year’s Harvey Awards. Gabriel Ba is nominated for Best Artist, Dave Steward for Best Colorist, James Jean is up for Best Cover Artist (did TUA series 1 covers and currently does the cover art for Fable), and The Umbrella Academy is up for Best Continuing or Limited Series. If I remember correctly, last year voting was only up to those who were established in the comic industry, but I can’t find anything about that limitation this year. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Otherwise, voting is taking place and will end August 28, 2009. Visit the Harvey Awards website for an official ballot and voting instructions.

Michael Jackson Dead.

I’m sorry for the un-MCR related news, but this needed to be said.

Last afternoon we lost one of musics greatest talents and lyricists ever. Michael Jackson. Michael died at 12:26 PM California time at his rented house in L.A. He was with his personal trainer and his father, who never liked Michael much and abused him as a child. Michael was first discovered with the Jackson 5 at the Apollo Theater in New York, where the Jackson 5 won a talent competition and exploded onto the big scene. After a few years peforming with his siblings, Michael split off for a solo career and released Off The Wall; which is considered the best disco album of all time. His next ablum was Thriller, the #2 best selling ablum of all time behind the Eagles Greatest Hits.
Michael is said to have died of cardiac arrest, which is different from a heart attack. Michael’s autopsy is schedualed for today.

I think we should all pay a moment of respect for Michael, who was clearly a musical genius of the past 40 years.

Sorry, I’m not bothering with spell check. And if there’s any mistakes about his life in here feel free to correct me. I’m a little shaken up.
